After Pantani (Premio Ubu for dramaturgy in 2013), a politic and deep canvas of the memorable cycling champion, Teatro delle Albe looks toward the East to tell the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent over 20 years under house arrest during the military dictatorship who oppressed Burma for over half century. Martinelli’s work starts from this determined and gentle woman, Nobel for Peace in 1991, played by Ermanna Montanari (Premio Eleonora Duse 2013). Then the work proceeds to a reflection about the contemporary world, the need for singing with joy ‘the majesty of life’, even when everything is surrounded by dark clouds.

How will Vita agli arresti di Aung San Suu Kyi be?
“It will narrate fifty years of Burmese life, without any space and time references”, these are the words expressed by Martinelli, winner of 2013 Ubu Prize for dramaturgy with his work, Pantani. “From the sacrifice of Aung San Suu Kyi’s father, who guides her whole life, to her choices, in different places and periods, going back to the house where the peace fighter was imprisoned like a mystic, alone with her unconscious, her dreams and phantoms. The work will confront itself with the Brechtian skepticism, according to which it is impossible to be good where violence exists and a land in need of heroes is damned. Here we stage the scandal of goodness instead. If we wish to save the world, goodness is a necessary heresy.” “She will have a protective phantom” Ermanna Montanari, Duse Prize in 2013, who performs Aung San Suu Kyi, says, “that is Rosa Luxemburg: in her opinion it is necessary to strive every day to remain human. Today the real heresy, originally meaning “choice”, is not to abandon ourselves to the stream of barbarity, devastation, boring turn of the world. Heretic is not the sweet goodness in the advertising, but who sacrifices oneself, who uses the time of his/her life for the others, not only for himself/herself.”
